Robert Cooper

robert_cooperRobert Cooper is a half-time parish priest and a half-time freelance photographer and calligrapher. Formerly arts chaplain in Durham Diocese, he has been invited to lead retreats at the Society of Mary and Martha in Devon, Scargill House in Yorkshire and Holland House in Worcestershire.

Many of his projects have been based on Holy Island in Northumberland. This led to his collaboration with David Adam on a series of books of prayers and photography and then to his own book of prayers and pictures for children A World of Wonders. Robert leads calligraphy and photography workshops for schools, churches and other community groups and his lecture “The Story of Holy Island” has been given across the north of England.

He is currently photographing and researching a new project: “Tees – the story of a river”. He works closely with the University of Sunderland’s International Research Centre for Calligraphy and carries out commissions for a variety of clients, amongst them the late Donald Swann – contributing calligraphy to the composer’s own edition of “Bilbo’s Last Song” (words by J R R Tolkien). Robert publishes his own series of greetings cards via his website.author_view_books
