John Rogerson

John Rogerson is Emeritus Professor of Biblical Studies, Sheffield University, and an active Anglican priest with a regular ministry at Beauchief Abbey, Sheffield.  He has published widely in the fields of the history, sociology and geography of the Old Testament, as well as Old Testament theology and ethics, the history of interpretation, and the history of biblical criticism.

His major publications with SPCK have been Old Testament Criticism in the Nineteenth Century: England and Germany (1984) and A Theology of the Old Testament (2009).  SPCK also published his The Psalms in Daily Life (2001), his edited volume Beginning Old Testament Study (2nd ed. 1998) and (jointly edited with Leslie Houlden) his Scripture Commentary on the Revised Common Lectionary (2001 to 2003).  For some years he convened a ‘Bible and Society Group’, and he edits its ’Biblical Challenges’ series, which addresses contemporary social problems in the light of ecumenical, critical biblical scholarship. His work has been recognized by the award of honorary degrees by the universities of Aberdeen, Jena and Freiburg.
