Description

Trevor Dennis is recognised as a master at bringing the Old Testament to life. His 1994 book ‘Sarah Laughed’, dealt with some of the Hebrew Bible’s stories about women. ‘Looking God in the Eye’, published in 1998, explored some of the stories in Genesis that told of encounters with God. This book is a sequel to the 1998 volume and covers more Old Testament stories where God appears on stage. It traces the development of God’s remarkable relationship with Moses, discusses the very funny story of his meetings with the wife of Manoah in Judges, the woman who later came to be named Eluma, and finally takes us through the book of Job to its wonderful climax where God appears to Job in the whirlwind. The author shares with us his fascination with these stories and poetry as well as his deep conviction about their relevance to our own lives before God. He asks some awkward questions, including ones about what they have to say to God, but his enthusiasm keeps coming to the surface. Of Job’s encounter with God, he writes ‘the sheer beauty of the poetry, the depth and colour of the portrayal of God, the scale of the vision and the enormity of the questions addressed all conspire in the end to shut our mouths’.
