Genesis 37-50
This third volume of Westermann’s masterful commentary on Genesis offers a stimulating treatment of the most humanly poignant and unified of the narratives in Genesis – the Joseph story. English-speaking readers now have access to Westermann’s thorough introduction to Genesis 37-50 as a whole, as well as to treatment of the individual texts familiar from the first two volumes: rich bibliographies: a new translation with linguistic notes: analysis of form and setting: word studies and short essays on particular themes: theological assessment. Westermann’s commentary on the Joseph narrative completes his magnum opus, a three-volume commentary on the book of Genesis. Its appearance in English has been greeted with enthusiasm as “one of the really great commentaries” (C. S. Rodd) and praised for its “thoroughness, clarity and freshness (John Bright). The work “opens up dimensions of meaning which are not only relevant for theology but for human existence in the modern world” (Bernhard Anderson).
