Description

This ground-breaking and highly engaging book begins by acknowledging that fears for society’s cohesion are not new – all dynamic societies must expect strains as they adjust to social and economic change. The author draws on personal experience as a parish priest and as a member of the local council in two cities: Leicester in a time of racial tension following mass immigration in the 1960s and 1970s; and Sheffield during the miners’ strike of 1984–85, triggered by pit closures and the restructuring of the British economy. In both cities, faith groups often played a positive role. More recent disturbances and outrages, however, have indicated that religion can become a marker of difference between people, reinforcing boundaries and leading to a breakdown of trust.

God and Community Cohesion suggests that the positive influence of religion will be in proportion to the ability of all faiths to see pluralism as a gift from God, and to accept that we live in a diverse society where a plurality of beliefs and values will exist until the world ends.

‘Helpful research with wise comment and reflection . . . this is topical, political and highly charged. This is more than policy and possibilities; it encourages positive action on the ground.’
