Isaiah 40-66 is not only a well-known part of Christian scripture, but essential background for understanding the New Testament. It is also important because it grew out of the deepest crisis in Israel’s history. Modern Christians, too, live in a time of crisis, of deep social and political unrest. Like the Israelites in Babylon, we need to reconstruct our traditional faith, to ask who we are, who God is, and what we must do to serve Him.
