Reaching for Reality
These pages describe occasions when religious life has been realigned after it had drifted away from reality. Churches are given to tradition, but there comes a time when tradition no longer excites the living. Vision and change are needed. Here Alan Webster sketches people and events which have been able to break out of routine and free themselves from words that no longer resonate and customs that no longer serve the gospel. Whether in the eighteenth century or today, these break-outs lead to an experience of resurrection. They have been costly, not cheap, and they have all involved risks. Often the risk-takers have been criticized for crossing frontiers. But these glimpses of change show that religion, to the surprise of some, has not become fossilized but continues to live and develop.
