Description

Richard Hooker (1554-1600) is the premier theologian of the Anglican religious tradition. Portions of his great apologia for Anglicanism, Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity, are still required reading in most Anglican seminaries and his ideas have been seminal for most other theologians in this denomination since the early seventeenth century. Unfortunately, Hooker’s defining ideas about the Church, the sacraments, Holy Scripture, the incarnation, prayer, worship, the Trinity, church polity, and virtually every aspect of Anglican faith and worship are no longer accessible to most Christians. His writing style is too cumbersome for most modern readers to entangle. This is especially so of the most important of all of his religious writings: ‘Book Five’ of the Polity. To remedy this problem and make Hooker’s timeless wisdom once again available to Christians inside the Anglican family and without, Dr Secor has rendered Hooker’s difficult prose in ‘Book Five’ into contemporary English, continuing the process of ‘translation’ begun in his acclaimed, The Ssermons of Richard Hooker: A Modern Edition. Praise for Richard Hooker on Anglican Faith and Worship: ‘Dr Secor has succeeded marvelously (sic – US critic’s spelling) in making one of the greatest of all religious works in the Anglican – or any – tradition immediately available to all. He has carefully and accurately rendered Hooker’s magnificent Fifth Book of Ecclesiastical Polity into contemporary language that is both sympathetic and faithful to the original Elizabeth text.’ – Dr Paul G. Stanwood, Co-editor, Folger Library Edition of the Works of Richard Hooker and President of the International Association of University Professors of English. ‘Dr Secor has done excellent and valuable work in this “translation” of Richard Hooker’s most important religious writing. What impresses me is that thi really is a translating and not just a transliterating of Hooker’s text. This approach genuinely distinguishes Secor’s work from John Keble’s nineteenth-century editions of Hooker’s Works or the recent critical Folger Library Edition with its adherence to original spelling. What makes this new version so accessible to the contemporary reader, however, is not just a matter of spelling. Secor has also broken down Hooker’s often exaggeratedly long sentences and massive unbroken blocks of text and provided greater clarity by generous use of spacing between internal units and frequent introduction of subtitles within chapters. His passionate efforts to make Hooker available to a new generation of scholars, ministers, and laypersons continue to flourish in this book.’ – The Revd Dr Lee W. Gibbs, Co-editor, Folger Library Edition of the Works of Richard Hooker, and Professor of Religious Studies, Cleveland State University.
