Austin Farrer has a well-deserved reputation for combining considerable scholarship with intellectual integrity; there is no better spokesperson for universal, deep-rooted, mature Christian orthodoxy.

In an age of much doubt and confusion Farrer insists upon the concrete, positive, affirmative elements of the Christian faith. He enables Christians to meet the argument that because of the discoveries associated with the theory of evolution, God has somehow been swept off the stage of world affairs into the wings. Rather, God is seen as a playwright who gets the characters on stage and then develops the plot by letting them be themselves.

Austin Farrer was Warden of Keble College, Oxford from 1960 until his death in 1968. He was also a Fellow of the British Academy. He is the author of The Essential Sermons (SPCK, 2008).
