The editors of the highly acclaimed The Study of Liturgy now turn their attention to the other major area of Christian devotion: spirituality. The scope of the book is enormous and richly varied; over sixty writers have been employed to cover the wide range of ’schools’ and teachers of prayer and spiritual life since the earliest days of Christianity. The authors studied are grouped according to theological or spiritual affinity, or on a geographical or chronological basks, to give a comprehensive introduction to the world of Christian spirituality. Extensive bibliographies are intended to lead the reader on to further study, and the book is supplemented with appropriate illustrations. An added feature is a special section on non-Christian religions, and there is also a section devoted to present-day spirituality. This exhaustive survey of the history of spirituality is preceded by a theological introduction and concludes with a consideration of some contemporary pastoral issues. The study of spirituality will be an indispensable reference tool for students, but it is also hoped that individual Christians who are searching for a deeper life of prayer and communion with God will be made aware of the extraordinarily rich heritage of Christian spirituality. The three editors represent the Anglican, Roman Catholic and Free Church Traditions, while the Orthodox tradition is also strongly featured with contributions by leading Orthodox scholars.
