Thomas Traherne
Thomas Traherne was one of the greatest poets and spiritual writers of the seventeenth century. Long overshadowed by fellow clergymen John Donne and George Herbert, his work is becoming increasingly recognized and appreciated for its singular voice. During his lifetime, only one of Traherne’s theological works was published, followed by a second after his death. But for a series of recent, timely discoveries, the poet would have faded completely from view. Some of his newly discovered work is published for the first time in this volume, alongside familiar and much loved poetry and prose. This selection introduces a poet whose work, at its best, offers an exhilarating glimpse of the glory of heaven. ‘This is a book of exceptional importance. Starting from what is familiar in Traherne, the passages of visionary writing, which are to be found in many anthologies, it takes us into less familiar territory…Traherne is a thinker very much of his own times…yet he is one who speaks in unexpected ways to the needs of the twenty-first century.’ A. M. Allchin.
‘Here is what many have waited for: the fullness of Traherne in his own words. Denise Inge displays skill and sensitivity in what she has chosen to give us in this rounded portrayal…Each reader will find here something that will touch them and influence the way in which they see today’s world.’ Esther de Waal, author of Living on the Border.
